Keep in mind the long ongoing, especially by a certain political mindset within this country and led by male politicians and celebrities, majority of being 'chickenhawks', War on Women that has once again reared it's ugly head in force and in the land of 'all are created equal', though it does say 'men' and they apparently take that literally as just 'men'!
August 25, 2012 - Faced with a shortage of pilots during World War II, Gen. Henry "Hap" Arnold formed the Women's Air Service Program (WASP) in 1943. More that 25,000 women applied but only 1,830 were accepted. June Wolfe Leckie, 90, was one of the few selected.Arnold may have wanted the women, but not many others in the military did, said Leckie, a resident of Sandhill Cove. "Men could walk on to the airfield without knowing anything about flying and become pilots. Women had to be licensed private pilots with at least 30 hours in the air." They had to meet all the other qualifications for flying imposed on males.
Leckie, a native of Columbus, Ohio, with a degree in liberal arts and English from the University of Columbus, had learned to fly while working for Curtis-Wright Aircraft. She volunteered and was sent to Avenger Air Field in Sweetwater, Texas, for military training. She learned to fly a wide variety of military craft. The task for the WASPs was to deliver aircraft around the world to combat units. read more>>>
