Jun 2, 2012 - Children of military parents who are, will be or were deployed in war, are traveling to Purdue University today. They will be taking part in Operation Purple, a week-long camp where children of deployed soldiers can learn how to cope with the stress of a parent away and connecting with other kids who understand what they are going through.
The Military Family Research Institute at Purdue is holding the camp for the fifth year. Purdue's Department of Health and Kinesiology and the National Military Family Association are also partners.
Kathy Broniarzcyk, director of outreach for the Institute, said this is the largest year for the camp. Today 51 sons and daughters of military families will arrive from Kentucky, Ohio, Kansas and other states.
In addition to summer camp activities, there are small daily group sessions that focus on stress management and interpersonal communication activities to encourage campers to build trust and friendship among their peers.
