Dec. 27, 2011 - John Lewandowski sometimes compares himself to Ty Pennington. "Well, Ty has this fabulous show with these fabulous sponsors," Lewandowski said, referring to the star of "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," ABC's hit TV series. "But we have to be realistic."Lewandowski is the chairman of the Disabled Veterans Committee on Housing, a group that helps veterans in the Northern Shenandoah Valley get proper housing, as well as taking care of special requirements for those who are disabled.
The committee recently met at the Northwestern Community Services building in Front Royal, along with a similar group from Arlington. Members of other organizations, such as Northwestern, People Inc. and Able Forces, also met to pool resources in an effort to receive a $1 million grant from the Department of Veterans Affairs.
The committee applied last year but "fell a few points short," according to Lewandowski. Veterans Affairs has criteria when considering grant applications, such as the need in an area, how the application was put together and, most importantly, if the community supports the cause.
Community support was where the group lacked, according to Robert Flynn, a member of the committee and director of veterans outreach. read more>>>
