Newest phase of the Sarasota National Cemetery had been delayed by challenged bids
January 21, 2011 - After a year and a half of bureaucratic snarls, Veterans Affairs has finally selected contractors to complete the second phase of the Sarasota National Cemetery.
Construction was initially supposed to begin on the second portion of the cemetery in May 2009 and completed this May, but several initial bids from contractors were rejected.
Now, new contractors Kadell Industries and C&C Contractors JV expect to break ground next week in a $15.9 million expansion that will add eight additional years of burial services for veterans in the area.
"Florida's 13th Congressional District is home to more than 97,000 men and women who have served in our armed forces," U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Longboat Key, said in a release. "This expansion will help ensure they are placed to rest close to home and with the honor and dignity they deserve."
The expansion will likely be finished in the summer of 2012 and feature 11,500 crypt gravesites, 16,000 cremain sites and other amenities. {continued}
