The knee-jerk reaction is to accuse the administrative staff of incompetence. A better response is to ask whether Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki asked Congress for the funds to hire and train claims processors when our country embarked on two simultaneous wars.
No one should have to wait a year or more to have his or her claim decided, especially if suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury after multiple combat deployments.
At the same time, our federal government has been blindsided by strains on our economy. Veterans who probably would not have filed disability claims had they not lost their jobs, their retirement or their private health care are filing now. Any claimed disability must be documented in military treatment records with two exceptions: post-traumatic stress disorder and a limited number of disabilities related to Agent Orange exposure in Vietnam. read more>>>
