The Country once had a pact with those who join and serve in it's 'Citizen Soldier' National Defense the 'National Guard' and 'Reserves'. You get called to duty, helping in your communities or someone elses, or training and employed your job is saved for you upon returning. During these two long occupations, Afghanistan and Iraq, that was thrown out long ago, or simply ignored without the Country saying a peep, because of the long Deployments and especially with the Multiple Deployments. Add in the total collapse of the economy and the high unemployment that came with it one gets called to serve that job, if needed by the employer is quickly filled or if not just eliminated. It's also caused many who were small businessmen and women to loose their businesses and having to return and start over if even possible, that was happening well before the collapse.
Once deployed, now many are unemployed
Aug 7, 2010 - SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- Specialist Alvaro Castaneda spent nine months on the front lines in Iraq. Now, he's fighting another battle: unemployment.
"The real world is really tough, you know," Castaneda said.
Castaneda isn't alone. The Springfield High School graduate is one of nearly 1,500 Oregon National Guard soldiers back from Iraq and looking for work. The 41st Infantry Combat Brigade Team returned in April. Once deployed, they're now unemployed and hoping to find work at -- among other avenues -- a veterans' job fair.
"I figured it would be easy, you know, just drop a resume especially with my experience that I had," Castaneda said. "But apparently not." Continue
