CAMP MIKE SPANN, Afghanistan - April 28, 2014 - Fort Bragg paratroopers were the last to leave a northern base named after the first American killed during the 2001 U.S. invasion of Afghanistan.Soldiers with B Company, 2nd Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment had been responsible for security on Camp Mike Spann, which was turned over to Afghan officials during a ceremony Sunday afternoon.
The camp is named for Johnny Michael Spann, a former Marine turned CIA agent who was killed Nov. 25, 2001, during a Taliban prisoner uprising at nearby Qala-i-Jangi fortress.
According to a small memorial on the camp, it also once bore the name Camp Patrick D. Tillman after the former professional football player and Army Ranger who was killed April 22, 2004, in a friendly fire incident.
At its peak, Camp Mike Spann, located outside Mazar-e-Sharif in Balkh province, housed more than 2,000 coalition troops and civilian contractors.
In its closing days, it housed only a few dozen people, mostly part of B Company. read more>>>
