CLEVELAND, Ohio – October 18, 2013 - The wheels of justice may turn slowly, but they do turn and sometimes grind, as in the case of accused veterans charity swindler Bobby Thompson.During the past two weeks of testimony in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court, Thompson has been portrayed by prosecution witnesses as a shadowy figure who created the U.S. Navy Veterans Association (USNVA) on a foundation of fiction. Addresses of USNVA state chapters turned out to be UPS mailboxes. Supposed USNVA officials couldn’t be found.
His own former attorney who represented the USNVA described him as a drinker who dressed like a homeless man and treated the misleading machinations of his charity like a personal game.
He was linked to multiple sets of identities from various states, all bearing different names but the same photos of Thompson.
Prosecutors contend that "Bobby Thompson" is a stolen identity used by FBI fugitive John Donald Cody to create a bogus charity that he ran for nearly eight years until being investigated and exposed in 2010. Law enforcement officials have said that Thompson bilked donors out of an estimated $100 million nationwide, including about $3 million from Ohio contributors. read more>>>
