Oct 9, 2013 - Lawmakers scrambled Wednesday afternoon to undo what's been called disgraceful -- shameful -- and embarrassing.Families of soldiers killed in action were told their survivor benefits would be suspended because of the shutdown.
The House voted to restore benefits this afternoon - but until the Senate and President act, the non-profit Fisher House Foundation has stepped in to make sure families get the benefits they deserve.

Shinseki told Congress that a piecemeal approach to restoring funding isn’t the answer, because VA partners with so many other federal agencies to deliver veterans services.He noted, for example, his department’s work with the Labor Department to promote veterans jobs programs and with the Department of Housing and Urban Development to end veteran homelessness.
VA has weathered government shutdowns in the past. But during the last one, in 1996, the United States was enjoying a sustained period of relative peace, Shinseki said.
The Executive Branch and it's Cabinet are the only Government Branch, Federal and State Legislatures, consistently doing for the Veterans Community, the Military personal and their Families, first term and into the second. While leading up to the Government shutdown there's been nothing but obstruction from the usual political ideologies, seeking to privatize the government for corporate profits, and no demand by the country they should finally Sacrifice as to these recent wars and especially the results from, the budgets are mostly still being borrowed, especially the VA's!
