CLEVELAND, Ohio – October 29, 2013 - Two different Bobby Thompsons sat in a Cuyahoga County Common Pleas courtroom Tuesday morning. One was genuine. The other is accused of being an imposter.
A defendant identified by prosecutors as John Donald Cody has been on trial the past three weeks, charged with assuming the identity of the real Bobby Thompson – and other unsuspecting men – and of using his U.S. Navy Veterans Association to steal more than $100 million from donors from 2002-10.
Prosecutors called the real Bobby Thompson to the witness stand. He is a 67-year-old Native American from the state of Washington, and testified he had never stepped foot in Tampa, Fla., where the other Bobby Thompson lived, operated his nationwide veterans solicitation operation, and opened several bank accounts in Thompson’s name.
Assistant Ohio Attorney General Brad Tammaro, who is prosecuting the case, flashed a succession of Florida bank documents onto the courtroom screen for the jury.
“That’s my Social Security number, and that’s my date of birth,” Thompson testified.
“Do you recognize that as your signature?” Tammaro asked.
“No,” Thompson replied. read more>>>
