June 23, 2013 - According to the people who were scammed, John Hargrove’s telephone pitch sounded sincere:
“This is John with Ohio Veterans Source. You have been generous in the past giving to veterans, and I was wondering if you could help out again. It means so much at Thanksgiving and Christmas."
If it were a different time of year, he might have a different reason that giving was important.
He sounded “decrepit,” said Colleen Ewing, 49, of Worthington — the kind of guy a charity might help out.
Ewing and dozens of others gave to Ohio Veterans Source in 2011. Problem was, Ohio Veterans Source existed only as a rented mailbox on W. 5th Avenue near Grandview Heights.
Hargrove, who did not serve in the military, was playing on people’s patriotism for money he used himself, officials said. He had been convicted in 2006 for the same thing.
In this latest round of the scam, he stole a little more than $2,000. read more>>>
