Oct. 17, 2012 - Unemployment is a big problem facing veterans, but new legislation will help military service members with relevant experience fill open commercial truck driving jobs, U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, told a small crowd gathered Wednesday at a local union hall.In a visit to the Dayton headquarters of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local Union 957, Brown, an original co-sponsor of the Military Commercial Driver’s License Act of 2012, said the legislation will ease the transition from military to civilian life for some service members by allowing them to get commercial driver’s licenses, or CDLs, where they are stationed.
Current law requires people to get CDLs in their home states, and licenses obtained in other states are non-transferable. But Brown said that requirement is a burden on veterans who receive relevant training on military bases in other states. He said the new law will remove this obstacle to veterans gaining employment in the freight industry.
“There are tens of thousands of openings in this country for truck drivers, but the problem is there are not enough people trained to do it,” Brown said. “Soon, people who were trained in the military to drive trucks will be able to use that training to more quickly get their commercial drivers licenses in Ohio or wherever they live.” read more>>>
