Jun 9, 2012 - New numbers from the Pentagon show a surge in suicides among U.S. troops this year, with an average of about one per day.In the first 155 days of the year, 154 suicides occurred. That number is more than double the number of U.S. forces killed in action in Afghanistan so far this year.
Adjutant General of the Tennessee National Guard, M.G. Max Haston says service members represent a "slice of life." Like many young people in the U.S., young service members are vulnerable to suicide.
"There [are] no boundaries. It's not female, it's not male, it's not a specific age group," he said. "It's not Air Force, it's not Army, it's not Marines, Navy, Coast Guard. It's balanced across the services."
On the 375th anniversary of the National Guard last December, Gen. Haston and the Tennessee National Guard launched a new program meant to reduce the number of suicides among Tennessee soldiers.
Through a partnership with the Jason Foundation, Guard members now have access to "Guard Your Buddy" -- an application for mobile devices. read more>>>
