This so called vets org has hit the news before as to questions about, something tells me it will continue to be bringing up questions of what exactly it is or isn't.
Feb 03, 2012 - An organization claiming to help homeless veterans is coming under fire across the country and here in East Texas. The group is called the Veterans Support Organization or VSO. It's a national non-profit organization that's stirring up controversy among veterans and those who support them.
Local Veterans and veterans organizations say the VSA is raising money in East Texas, but as far as they can tell, it's not staying here. They also say, not all of the money is going to veterans.
CBS 19 talked to the founder and president of the VSO. He says the group never promised the money would stay in East Texas, but he says, it does stay in the state.
If you've seen booths at East Texas Walmarts and Sam's Clubs asking for donations for homeless veterans, it could be the Veterans Support Organization.
U.S. Army Veteran Dr. Dwayne Collins says, "I question where the money might be going."
J.D. Collett with the Andrews Center has opened two local houses for homeless vets. He says his organization and others like it haven't seen a dime.
"None of it's going to East Texas," Collett says.
Collins says, "It's a situation of false advertising, of where's the money going and is it benefiting their cause to the extent that it should."
The president and founder of the Veterans Support Organization, Richard VanHouten says that was never the intent.
He says, "Donating money is basically a secondary. No nonprofit raises their money and gives it all away." read more>>>
