6 December 2011 - Stacey Bredberg has cared for her husband, Timothy, at their Liverpool home since he returned from Iraq in 2004 with traumatic brain injury and post traumatic stress disorder.She does all the shopping because he cannot stand being in crowds. She makes sure he takes his medications and remembers to eat three meals a day. She helps him cope with recurring nightmares. At the same time, she cares for their 5-year-old son.
“You never know what to expect because the PTSD brings out so many things,” Bredberg said. “You feel alone.”
Bredberg is what the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs calls a “hero on the homefront.” For many years veteran caregivers like Bredberg were largely forgotten.
But now for the first time the VA is offering cash compensation, health insurance and other benefits to eligible caregivers of veterans seriously injured in the line of duty since Sept. 11, 2001. read more>>>
