15 Dec 2011 - For some service members, the battle doesn’t end on the front lines of war. The images and stress can sometimes haunt them for years to come. The Batavia V.A. Medical Center broke ground Thursday for a new residential treatment center for women veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder, it’s one of only ten such centers in the country.
We tend to think of a “veteran” as a male term, but it’s not. About twenty percent of military personnel are women.
PTSD Residential Programs Manager Dr. Lauretta Lascu said, “We historically have served women who have trauma related to military sexual trauma, while in the service now more and more though, we are seeing women who have been in combat theatre in Iraq and Afghanistan and who additionally have trauma related to combat exposure.”
People with PTSD may re experience the trauma.
“And that may surface in the form of flashbacks, nightmares or disturbing thoughts of the event,” said Lascu. read more>>>
