December 9, 2011 - Houston-area Democratic Rep. Al Green is one step closer to getting the federal government to create a watchdog special assistant within the Cabinet-level Department of Housing and Urban Development to help homeless veterans.A subcommittee of the House Financial Services Committee approved Green’s legislation on Thursday by a voice vote, advancing the measure toward expected action by the full House.
Green’s so-called Homes For Heroes Act of 2011 would establish the position of special assistant for veterans affairs within HUD as well as require an annual report on homeless veterans in a bid to raise the profile of homeless veterans and strengthen the federal response.
Green said the subcommittee action was “an important step in honoring our military men and women by passing this critical legislation that will help eliminate homelessness and enhance the coordination of federal housing programs for our nation’s heroes.”
Green added: “This is the least a grateful nation can do.”
Green said nearly 650,000 people suffer homelessness on any given night – including nearly 76,000 homeless veterans. Roughly 145,000 veterans spend at least one night in a shelter each year. read more>>>
