SOLDIERING ON: North Adams native Gery Benedetti, right, tells his story of serving in the Vietnam War in History channel’s ‘Vietnam in HD.’November 8, 2011 - In 1968, North Adams native Gery Benedetti volunteered for the U.S. Navy “River Raiders” and found himself part of the Vietnam War.
Now Benedetti’s story, along with those of 12 other veterans, will be told in “Vietnam in HD,” a three-part series tonight through Thursday at 9 on History. Benedetti will represent his friend Charlie Laczynski, who joined the Navy the same time he did, and thousands of others Navy veterans. Actor Armie Hammer (“The Social Network”) voices Benedetti as a young man.
“That was an important part of your life, whether you liked it or you didn’t,” Benedetti told the Herald last week in a telephone interview while on vacation in Arizona. “Back then, you had the draft. You served. You went through a war. You put your life on the line. It’s just an experience, and it needed to be told in a different light.” read more>>>
