A group of veterans is calling on the UK Government to fulfil its duty of care for those involved in nuclear weapons tests in the 1950s.
24 November 2011 - A group of nuclear test veterans and their relatives were at Holyrood to continue their campaign for recognition and compensation from the UK Government.
The group attended a debate led by SNP MSP Christina McKelvie who called on the UK Government to fulfil its duty of care for those involved in nuclear weapons tests in the 1950s.
Only around 1000 British nuclear test veterans survive, including 70 in Scotland.
Many of them suffer ill health and have long argued that the radiation to which they were exposed caused cancers, infertility and high rates of miscarriage, along with rare degenerative diseases.
They are currently involved in legal proceedings against the Ministry of Defence in what is the latest round of their long-running campaign for compensation.
Ken McGinley, 73, a nuclear test veteran campaigner for 30 years, was just a teenager when he arrived at Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean in 1957. read more>>>
