October 7th, 2011 - For the first time in Arizona, women military veterans who are struggling with civilian life have an affordable housing option. It's called Mary Ellen's Place, located near Seventh Street and Peoria Avenue. It has 15 studio apartment units to help military women get back on their feet.
"And then go ou into the society that they cherished before, with a larger apartment or home ownership," said Joan Cisco with Veterans First Ltd.
Like military men, Cisco said women veterans struggle when returning to civilian life.
"Some of these women we have helped here were on the verge of homelessness, so we bring them in," she said. "It's providing at least some ability to get them off the streets until we can find them housing and help them be safe and secure. There's a lot of women who are on the streets and it's sad."
Air Force veteran Charlene Franco is one whom Mary Ellen's Place has helped. She said it saved her from homelessness. read more>>>
