July 17, 2011 - An estimated 80 members of Lorain County veterans’ organizations attended an awareness dinner meeting yesterday to learn more about the present and future of a facility for homeless veterans to open this coming winter at St. Joseph Community Center.
The home on the fifth floor of the community center, 205 W. 20th St., Lorain, will be called Valor Home Lorain County, according to Daniel P. Gillotti, chairman of the by-laws committee of the local Valor Home. Yesterday’s meeting was one of several that are taking place this year to educate the public about the facility and to offer encouraging news about the success of two other homeless veterans shelters in Ohio. It is also a way to seek sponsors from area organizations and businesses for each of the rooms in the facility.
“We’re calling it an adopt-a-room program,” said Gillotti.
Valor Home Lorain County will have 30 single-bed bedrooms, as well as two kitchenettes, a family room, computer room, pantry, laundry room and offices, said Gillotti.

Earlier this year, the Ravenna-based Family & Community Services Inc., received a grant of $469,948 to create a 30-bed shelter at St. Joseph Community Center.
“The money will help pay for renovations to create the living space, so homeless veterans can get help finding jobs and permanent housing,” said Bates.
“It’s a big community project,” Bates said. “There’s going to be a lot of hands helping. To me this is just going to be a fabulous thing to help veterans.”
The money comes as part of federal grants announced last year by U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki.
More than $41.9 million will go to 40 states for community groups to provide 2,568 beds for homeless veterans. The money is part of a five-year federal initiative to eliminate homelessness among veterans. read more>>>
