About 500 attend veterans cemetery groundbreaking
July 23, 2010 CORPUS CHRISTI — Baldemar Gonzales, 59, pushed through hundreds of veterans and their family members Friday to get close to golden shovels in a mound of soil.
"I want to see," said the Army National Guard veteran as city, county, state and federal leaders broke ground for the Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery. "That's going to be my resting place."
The ceremony was a historic event for South Texas, said Pablo Garza, commander of Corpus Christi's American Legion Post 364.
"In the last year, our color guard attended 86 veterans' funerals," Garza said.
Now family members won't have the burden of traveling to distant military cemeteries or the cost of private burials, he said. Continued
